2024 events

Posted by chris on February 20, 2024

2024 sees three events in the community chaired by members of ARG-tech.

In September, Chris is serving as Programme Chair for the 10th International Conference on Computational Models of Argument (COMMA 2024) to be held in Hagen, Germany. The call for papers is just out, with a deadline for submissions of 18 April 2024.

Just before that, in August, the 11th International Workshop on Argument Mining will be located with ACL 2024 in Bangkok, and is the venue for the 1st Shared Task on Dialogical Argument Mining (DialAM-2024). DialAM-2024 is led by Ramon, Ella, John and Chris, and the call for participation is also just out. The dataset is released on 17 April 2024.

And finally, with Gabriella Lapesa (Duesseldorf), Valentin Gold (Gottingen) and Annette Hautli-Janisz (Passau), Chris is co-organising the 1st Workshop on Language Driven Deliberation Technology (DELITE 2024) located with LREC-COLING 2024 in Turin in May. The deadline for submissions has just been revised to 2 March 2024

We look forward to seeing our friends and colleagues at all these events.

ACL2019 tutorial on Advances in Argument Mining

Posted by chris on May 17, 2019

Following our work delivering tutorials at IJCAI2016, ACL2016 and ESSLLI2017, Chris Reed and Katarzyna Budzynska are this year delivering a tutorial at ACL2019 in Florence on Sunday, 28 July.

We will be focusing on argument mining, and given that it is such a fast moving area, the way in which the field has been shaped by advances over the past three years.

The tutorial has its own dedicated website at arg.tech/acl2019tut

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the tutors — and we hope to see you in Florence in August.

XCI 2017: Explainable Computational Intelligence

Posted by chris on March 30, 2017

Martin Pereira Farina and Chris Reed are organising a workshop on explainable computational intelligence that aims to connect natural language generation, fuzzy systems and previously impenetrable AI systems that are typically seen only as black boxes.

The XCI2017 workshop will be held at INLG 2017 in Santiago de Compostela on 4 September 2017 and the deadline for submissions is 2 June 2017.

Rory Duthie wins Best Paper at COMMA

We are delighted to report that Rory Duthie has been awarded Best Student Paper Prize at the 6th International Conference on Computational Models of Argument (COMMA 2016) in Potsdam. Rory has just started the second year of his PhD under the supervision of Katarzyna Budzynska, and was awarded the prize for his paper, Mining Ethos in Political Debate.

The Centre for Argument Technology is delighted to again have a strong showing at the Conference on Computational Models of Argument. This is the 6th edition of the biennial COMMA and is being hosted in Potsdam this week.

Members of the Centre have contributed to a total of four papers at the conference:

  • Duthie, R., Budynska, K & Reed, C.A. (2016) “Mining Ethos in Political Debate”
  • Janier, M., Snaith, M., Budzynska, K., Lawrence, J. & Reed, C.A. (2016) “A System for Dispute Mediation: The Mediation Dialogue Game”

Scottish Argumentation Day 2013

Posted by chris on June 26, 2013

The 2013 Scottish Argumentation Day will be hosted by ARG:dundee on Friday 19th July. The main aim of the day is to allow researchers in argumentation and related fields from across Scotland and further afield to come together and present their work in an informal setting. The day follows on from the successful first meeting held in Aberdeen in 2011. For more details, please contact Mark Snaith.

Congratulations to Dr Snaith
